How art therapy supports people with disabilities
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy which combines traditional therapy techniques with the evidence-based benefits of creative self-expression. This person-centred approach is inclusive of all abilities and each session is tailored to the needs and goals of the individual. In a safe, nurturing, and non-judgemental space, the participant is encouraged to explore their thoughts and emotions, find meaning, connection and purpose.
Creative art therapy can be particularly supportive for people who are unable to verbalise their feelings. Unlike traditional talk-therapy, which relies on the use of verbal communication, art therapy uses alternative modes of expression to overcome limitations. This whole-brain approach bypasses that which is already in our cognitive awareness to access further insights and embodied wisdom, improving overall physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Rather than centering around the creation of a masterpiece, art therapy focuses on the individual’s overall wellbeing and development of social and emotional skills. Using primarily visual and somatic modalities, practices may include painting, drawing, collage, imagination, roleplay, storytelling, and movement.
